Frequently asked questions

Who is Unika’s training for?

You can start with no previous hairdressing experience. The training also suits students and working professionals who want to strengthen specific skills. There is no minimum age or other entry requirement.

How do I learn a practical skill online?

You watch a technique, practise it yourself on a training head and complete the related assignments. You can pause the video, revisit any step and repeat the exercise as often as you need. You submit photos and videos of your practical work for assessment through the learning platform.

Who assesses my practical work?

A real teacher assesses your work, not AI. You receive individual feedback on the photos and videos you submit.

What does each training package include?

UNIKA CUTCRAFT focuses on haircutting. It includes Module 1 Working as a Hairdresser and Barber, Module 2 Hair and Scalp, and Module 3 Hairdressing Services.

UNIKA COLOURCRAFT focuses on hair colouring. It includes Module 1 Working as a Hairdresser and Barber, Module 2 Hair and Scalp, and Module 6 Hair Colouring Services.

UNIKA BARBERCRAFT focuses on barbering. It includes Module 1 Working as a Hairdresser and Barber, Module 2 Hair and Scalp, and Module 4 Barbering Services.

UNIKA COMPLETE covers all seven modules of the complete hairdressing and barbering programme. The complete programme includes 37 instructional videos, more than 300 assignments and quizzes, 90 video-based theory lessons and a 140-page professional textbook.

Can I buy a single module of my choice?

Modules are not sold as individual items that you can combine freely. You can choose CUTCRAFT, COLOURCRAFT or BARBERCRAFT, or purchase the complete UNIKA COMPLETE programme.

Do I need my own equipment?

Yes. You practise on a training head using the professional tools and products required for each assignment. Equipment is not included in the price of a training package and is purchased separately. Tools and supplies are available from Unika’s equipment shop.

Is the professional textbook included?

The 140-page professional textbook is included with UNIKA COMPLETE. Students on CUTCRAFT, COLOURCRAFT or BARBERCRAFT can purchase it separately.

Can I get personal help from a teacher?

Yes. You can ask your teacher questions on the learning platform and discuss course topics with other students.

UNIKA COMPLETE also includes three private, 20-minute online sessions with an experienced Unika teacher. You can use them when you need individual help. The sessions must be used within your 12-month access period.

Can I purchase additional one-to-one teaching?

Yes. Students on any package can purchase private online sessions with a teacher. A 20-minute session costs €39, and a 45-minute session costs €60. Teaching is available in Finnish and English.

What languages can I study in?

The training is available in Finnish and English. Both versions contain the same material and provide the same support.

How long will I have access?

Access to every package lasts 12 months from the date of purchase. You need to complete your package within that period or purchase an extension.

What if I cannot finish within 12 months?

You can purchase a three-month extension. The extension costs 3/12 of the package price: €174.75 for CUTCRAFT, COLOURCRAFT and BARBERCRAFT, and €349.75 for UNIKA COMPLETE. The extension is paid in a single payment.

What if I do not pass an assignment?

You can try again with no limit on attempts. For some assignments, you will need to revisit the relevant lesson before making another attempt.

What document or certificate will I receive?

You receive a completion document for every module you pass. Once you have successfully completed all the studies and assignments in the package you purchased, you receive a Unika certificate for that package.

Is a Unika certificate an official Finnish vocational qualification?

No. A Unika certificate confirms that you have successfully completed your Unika training package. It is not an official Finnish vocational qualification or, by itself, a recognised unit of one.

If you want to earn an official Finnish vocational qualification in hair and beauty care, you can apply to an authorised vocational education provider. That provider will assess your previous learning and plan any further study and skills assessments with you. Unika’s training can help you prepare for this route, but the authorised provider decides on admission and recognition of prior learning.

How much do the packages cost?

UNIKA CUTCRAFT, COLOURCRAFT and BARBERCRAFT each cost €699, and UNIKA COMPLETE costs €1,399. If you buy before the course opens, the pre-sale price is 30% lower. You can pay by card, Apple Pay, Google Pay or Klarna, which also lets you pay in instalments on Klarna's terms. Company purchases are paid by card.
